Sarcoma Treatment Centers

LMSDR highly recommends that you make every effort to be treated at, or at least get a second opinion from, a recognized high volume sarcoma center.

WHY SHOULD YOU TO GO TO A SARCOMA CENTER?

  • Sarcoma specialists see at least 100 sarcoma patients a year. Some oncologists have never treated another leiomyosarcoma patient.

  • Team of specialists who work only with sarcoma and do continuing education in sarcomas.

  • Access to clinical trials and new treatments.

  • Overall survival rates are better for those treated at a sarcoma center.

CRITERIA FOR A RECOGNIZED SARCOMA CENTER

  • Team of sarcoma specialists including oncologists, physician assistants, radiologists, infusion nurses, therapists.

  • At least one staff member who belongs to sarcoma-oriented medical organization such as Connective Tissue Oncology Society (CTOS)

  • Journal published research and case studies.

  • Tumor board where sarcoma team meets to discuss patient care.

  • At least 50 sarcoma patients yearly.

  • MRI imaging available on site, PET scans desirable.

  • Clinical trials.

  • Support such as social workers, psychologists, psychologists.  Support group desirable.
