The Bernadette M. Hollis LMS Research Fund
"Flip Flops Fundraiser" - July 2008
The Bernadette M. Hollis LMS Research Fund was established to raise awareness and direct funds toward specific LMS research.
This photo was taken of our Mom, Bernadette M. Hollis, in June 2005. One year later, in June 2006, she was diagnosed with leiomyosarcoma (LMS). Since then, she's endured numerous surgeries and chemotherapeutic/hormonal treatments while continuing her law practice in upstate New York.
Despite Stage IV LMS, she continues to enjoy her profession at a full-time pace, and spends time away from law visiting with her children and their spouses, Amy (and Matt), Ellen, Alfred (and Kelly), Philip and her grandson, Daniel, going out with friends, painting (oils and watercolor), cooking/baking, and traveling around the world.
Since life just seems a little better in flip flops, we decided to put our activism into high gear and plan our first fundraiser around this theme. The "Flip-Flops Fundraiser" for Mom's fund was held Thursday, July 17 in Collegeville, PA with over 30 ladies wearing flip flops and enjoying good food and drinks while supporting the fund. Each lady was greeted with a "Cure Leiomyosarcoma-LMSdr.org" purple wristband and crystal amethyst toe ring from Footcandy.com, and learned a little more about Mom and LMS throughout the course of the evening.
There were 3 great raffles which generated lots of enthusiasm and support:
Amy Rovi (daughter), Nikki Forsyth (lucky winner), Ellen Hollis (daughter) and Mom's painting
-
a beautiful, limited edition giclee of an oil Mom painted after being inspired last summer during our annual "Berna's Boat Ride" on Lake George
-
Winner: Nikki Forsyth
-
a gorgeous, custom-designed jewelry piece made exclusively for the event and donated by our dear friend, Amy Nix of Sophia Jewelry Design
-
Winner: Jeanne Regnante
-
a charming "Southern Living" planter overflowing with purple hydrangea donated by Barb Berkowich Star Director of "Southern Living"
-
Winner: Diann Doelp
In addition, Barb Berkowich presented a gorgeous display of "Southern Living" home décor and entertaining items and ladies ordered on the spot. Commissions and proceeds from this were donated to the fund. Thank you, Barb!
Main Line Gold Exchange attended too, and turned broken earrings, unwanted jewelry in metals of gold, silver, platinum into cash! Commissions and proceeds from this aspect of the event were donated to the fund, too. Thanks so much to Russ, Shelley, Rebecca and Fran from Main Line Gold Exchange!
The evening was a great success with $2000.00 raised for Mom's fund. Thanks to everyone for attending and supporting our first fundraiser (or contributing online!) to benefit the Bernadette M. Hollis LMS Research Fund. Your support means so much to my Mom, our family, LMS research and ultimately, all those courageous people dealing with LMS. Consistent with LMSdr's mission, let's continue to work for the cure!
Love,
Amy Rovi and Ellen Hollis
