Running a Marathon: March 2nd, 2008 Tanya Parker
I am running my first marathon, the Los Angeles Marathon, on Sunday March 2nd, on behalf of my very dear friend Becca Cohen. I have known Becca for the past seven years; we met through our daughters who were in the same preschool in Berkeley, CA and became fast friends. I quickly learned what an amazing person Becca is and am very honored to be her friend. I have always appreciated her caring nature, her love of the outdoors, her dedication to her students through her work as an Adaptive PE teacher, and her loyalty and support for those she loves.
Last fall Becca was diagnosed with Leiomyosarcoma, a very rare and aggressive form of cancer. It was diagnosed in her uterus and has since spread to her lungs. She is currently undergoing chemotherapy treatment. Becca's courage and positive spirit during this time have been inspiring to all who know her. As I now live in Los Angeles I have felt very helpless being so far away, not being able to easily stop by to visit or to bring a lovingly prepared meal. For me, this is how I can help and support Becca: by running 26.2 miles and raising money and awareness in the process for this terrible disease.
I have been a casual runner for the last 20 years but it has only been in the last two years that I have started to set some goals for myself for long distance running. I have run three half-marathons, but the goal of running a full marathon is something I never imagined I could do. However, I have been training for the last few months and have logged 20 miles as my furthest run so far. I do believe I can finish the marathon and hope to cross that finish line in under 5 hours!
Your donation to the LMSarcoma Direct Research Foundation on behalf of this goal will help in the search for a cure for this disease. This type of cancer is very rare and has not been well researched. The Foundation has just launched an effort to raise $2.5 million to find a cure or effective treatment. My goal is to raise $2,000 towards these efforts. Please consider making a donation to support me in the run of my life, and most importantly, to support Becca in the fight of her life.
Thank you for your support.
