Running a Marathon: June 1st, 2008 Amanda Tack
Dear, Friends, Family, and Supporters,
On June 1st, I will be running the San Diego Rock & Roll marathon for
the first time. This is my very first marathon and I am raising money for Leiomyosarcoma (LMS);
a rare and very aggressive form of cancer in which there is not much research and
data available. Though this cancer is very rare; it affects about four people in
every million. The cancer spreads through the blood stream and can affect the
lungs, liver, blood vessels, or any other soft tissue in the body.
Presently there is no cure, only remission if it can be attained. This
rare cancer can reappear anywhere and at any time. Because of its rarity,
few doctors know how to treat it and it attracts very little research. My
goal is to raise $2,000 to help with medical research.
Just last April, my cousin, Dawn Peragallo, lost her life to LMS. She had
a long, hard-fought battle with the "dragon", as she referred to
her cancer. Dawn left behind countless loved ones, including her husband, Jeff,
and two young children, Courtney and Tyler. In fact, her youngest son Tyler never
really knew his mom as healthy as he was only 2 when she was diagnosed.
Dawn was a courageous young woman who fought until the very end.
Dawn's spirits throughout her fight were incredibly high and she was such a
strong person as she battled this demon.
Over the next 5 years she never stopped fighting or having fun. She started a
support group for children who's parents have cancer called Kids2Kids at her
local therapy center and worked so hard to get awareness about LMS to others.
She kept an inspirational email diary of her courageous journey with cancer onto death
which has been shared with thousands across the world and her dream was to someday
make it into a book (we are currently working at making that dream come true).
Dawn gave her time, body, and life to find a cure for this horrible disease. If Dawn were
still alive she would still be fighting for a cure, searching for better treatments,
raising money, but she is not with us today so we must fight for her.
I am asking you to donate $1 per mile ($26.20) or anything you can afford.
Help me slay this dragon one mile at a time.
